Lammas

August 1

Lughnasadh, Loaf-Mass

Lammas is the festival of the dying and the rising God, commemorating the death and subsequent ressurection of the God.

Stories of Lammas are srongly linked to death and sacrifice, celebrated at the first of the harvest. Often it is said that people in the old days thought life was cheap, but this doesn't mean the death of a family member. it is common that the last sheaf of the first feild harvested would be sacrificed to the land, in repayment for the bountiful crop.

Some of the corn from the crop would immediatly be ground into flour and made into loaves of bread, thus the Loaf-Mass.This was considered sharing the blessing of the land wihth people. Some of the bread would be made into shapes of men, thus gingerbread men.
